4-H Christmas In November Awards Banquet



4-H Christmas
Tuesday, November 25 from 6pm to 8:30pm
Volunteer Leaders, youth leaders, and 4-Her’s will be recognized for their hard work and dedication at the Annual Awards Banquet.  The Sew Cool 4-H club members and all 4-H’ers are invited to participate in the 4-H Fashion Revue and show off the garments they have constructed this year or wearable accessories they have crocheted or knitted.  Three 4-H’ers: Grace Sawyer, Johanna Carpenter, and Ashlyn Clark along with club leader, Cris Ammons participated in the Make it With Wool Competition in Cabarrus County in September. Ashlyn Clark placed third in the teen division, Cris Ammons placed second, and Grace Sawyer and Johanna Carpenter received honorable mention.  Please submit garments or wearable accessory by Friday, November 21 for judging and recognition at the awards night.  All 4-H’ers participating in the fashion revue will receive $20 cloverbucks certificate to use at a 4-H event of their choice.  Please call the Extension Center at 456-3575 to sign-up. 

To celebrate this year in 4-H we will have a PowerPoint with all the pictures from program activities.  Everyone who attends can get into the holiday spirit and is invited to sing Christmas carols. The Extension office will provide sliced ham, rolls, and sweet tea. Please bring your favorite potluck dish.  Also this year for the awards banquet we will have a people’s choice award for desserts.  If you would like to enter please bring 50 bite-sized servings to enter.  The winner will receive a $25 gift card to the Chocolate Bear in Waynesville.   

This year we will also be having a silent auction fundraiser.  Several merchants, restaurants, and regional theaters have donated items and it's the perfect time to buy auction items for Christmas gifts. This will be a fun night for the whole family!

Book Review: Monday, January 27 from 3:30 to 5pm
All 4-H’ers who attended the Global Leadership Summit will receive the book and audio companion for Crucial Conversations by Patterson, Grenny, McMillan, and Switzler and are invited to participate in the next Readers Are Leaders.  These authors lay out the tools for talking when the stakes are high.  The authors attribute most human problems to how people behave when others disagree with them, in emotional high-stake circumstances.   4-H’ers will discuss the book and have a pizza party.  Please call the Extension Office in advance to sign-up at 456-3575.  The book review will be held on Friday, November 7 from 4 to 6pm in the small conference room.

Annual 4-H Etiquette Dinner

4-H’ers will learn how to fold napkins, set a formal place setting, and basic skills to be a waiter or waitress.  The annual etiquette dinner is also a great opportunity for 4-H’ers to learn table manners.  4-H’ers are encouraged to ask questions throughout the meal and learn the etiquette of our three course meal: soup, entrĂ©e and dessert.  The experience is designed to give youth more confidence at formal dining situations.  The owner of Sid’s On Main, Paige will also give her perspective of what it’s like to own a food business.  The cost is $20 and 4-Hers need to dress business casual.   Parents are welcome to attend too and there will be a table reserved for parents.  Please call the Extension Center at 456-3575 to sign-up by Wednesday, October 15.

4-H Electric Congress

North Carolina 4-H Electric Congress is an educational event designed to recognize excellence in the Electric Program throughout the state.  Electric Congress travels from region to region of the state, thus allowing for a variety of programming opportunities for everyone.  This year Electric Congress will be held in Cullowhee, North Carolina at Western Carolina University.  4-H members participate in workshops, meet their Power Company Representatives, and interact with other electric winners.  The four delegates from Haywood County are: Benjamin Carpenter, Kaitlin Frazier, Rachel Warren, Holly Warren, Stacey Frazier and Coley Bartholomew.  Participants are chosen based upon involvement in electric project area and leadership over county electric workshop. 

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Day at Cataloochee

Thursday, July 10 from 10am to 4pm (Weather Permitting)
Open to all 4-H families
4-H’ers and families are invited to come to Cataloochee National Park, a community preserved much as it was when it became a National Park during the 1920s.  During the day, 4-Hers will take a hike up to the Whitehead homestead, eat watermelon, and pitch horseshoes or corn hole, play in the creek and enjoy a beautiful day as Appalachian kids would have over 100 years ago.  4-Hers are encouraged to bring their cameras and take photos to enter into the Haywood County Fair this fall.  4-Hers will view wildlife including deer, elk, and turkey; as well as homes and barn structures from the time period.  Participants need to bring bag lunch, towel, swim clothes, sunscreen, water shoes, camera, snacks, and refillable water bottle. Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) Camp



Monday, July 7 through Friday, July 11 from 10am to 4pm
Canton Middle School
Cost: $75
Open to rising fourth through the eighth graders are invited to participate in the week long Junior Appalachian Musician (JAM ) Day Camp held at Haywood Community College.  Youth can learn how to play the fiddle, guitar or banjo; as well as participate in workshops learning about Appalachian dances, songs, stories, and traditions.  The camp will be held from 10am to 4pm and the cost is $75.  Please call the Haywood County Arts Council for more information or to sign-up at 828-452-0593. Some partial scholarships are available based on financial need.

West District Teen Retreat at Black Mountain YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly

Haywood County 4-Her’s will have a fun weekend in Black Mountain at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly. 4-Hers will meet other county delegates from across the district, earn 4-H  Ambassador credits, take part in district officer elections, and participate in fun and informative workshops.  The cost of attending Teen Retreat is $35 for early registration due by Friday, March 14.  4-H Teen Leadership Council members will receive a $40 partial scholarship in addition to their portion above to cover the full cost of registration.  Please call the Extension Center at 456-3575 to register or for more information, spaces are limited.  4-Hers will need to bring a notepad, warm clothes for outdoor activities, and toiletries.
