It’s that time of year again to start our 2009 Haywood County Winter Sewing Classes. These are sewing classes that are planed to teach youth the basic skills needed to make a simple garment. These classes are planned to be a learning experience and fun.

Adventure Club Announces Fall Events

The fall events have been announced and everyone is excited about getting outside in the beautiful fall weather. We are going to have some fun but, fall weather means more unpredictable weather that requires more preparation than summer adventures so, make sure that you come prepared for windy cold wet weather. We reserve the right to prevent anyone from coming on a trip who doesn't bring the required clothing or equipment listed for the outing. Call Dan for a list of required equipment.

If the weather is too severe or could possibly ruin the exprience then we will cancel or reschedule the trip.

Every child must have paperwork on file with the 4-H office and be at least 10 years or older although some specific trips may allow for younger kids to go. The overnight camping trip in November is for kids 10 and older and requires that each child under the age of 15 bring a parent or guardian. We strongly encourage parents to come on any and all trips. These are fun events for the whole family.

To attend a trip you must call and notify Dan at the 4-H office one workday before the trip to tell him that you are coming. Some trips will have limited Van seating.

Jim Calder the Wood Carver is Back

This past January our 4-H kids got a very special opportunity to learn the basics of wood carving from the "International Wood Carving Champion," at a class he led at the extension office.

He taught them using a method he invented called the triangle method where the kids can carve human faces by only carving triangles and they carved them out of SWEET POTATOES! Thats right, nice safe sweet potatoes that actually last a long time once they dry out.

Following the class, Woodcarving Illustrated, a nationally distributed magazine, wrote an article about Jim and his carving techniques that features OUR VERY OWN 4-HERS! You can read the article and see pictures of our kids at the following link.

You can read more about him and see his masterpieces at his website:

Well Jim is back in Haywood County and he is giving free carving demonstrations at the visitors center in Frog Level. It is free and open to anyone who wants to come (adults too).

Where: WNC Visitors Center located in Frog Level

Date: Friday, August 15 and Saturday, August 16

Times: Friday: 6-9pm Saturday: 12-6pm

District Activity Day was a Success

We are so proud of the Haywood County 4-Hers who took the time and put forth the effort to do a presentation or perform at this year's West District Activity Day in Brevard. Congratulations to Jesse Evans, Mark Kirkpatrick, Steven Kirkpatrick, Sally Dixon, Patty Popular and Greg Popular. These 4-Hers prepared a presentation, practiced and then presented in front of a panel of judges on topics they chose from science and technology to public speaking to health and fitness.

Haywood County would also like to congratulate Kyle, Keegan and Connor Lucky-Smith on a great performance of John Henry during the Talent Show Competition. Out of 15 different participants, the Lucky-Smith boys were one of only two groups who were asked to perform again during the awards ceremony for everyone.

At the end of the day these 4-Hers represented Haywood County well bringing home 4 gold medals and 1 bronze in various presentation categories.

Being able to present oneself in front of others teaches a variety of Life Skills from organization to interviewing for a job to building confidence and leadership and many more.

If you would like to learn more about opportunities like District Activity Day and/or presentations, please call Nick at the Extension Office. 828-456-3575

District Activity Day

District Activity Day(DAD) is right around the corner. The date is set for June 26. To participate in DAD you must do a presentation here at the county level first. The names of youth who have presented at the county and are going to the District will be submitted on June 13. You must present before this date to be registered to go to District Activity Day, but don't worry it's not too late.

All participants in DAD will receive a minimum of a 1/2 scholarship to go to NC 4-H Congress in July. If your presentation wins at the District level you get to present at the State level and you will receive a full scholarship to go to NC 4-H Congress. Check back soon for more information regarding NC 4-H Congress.

We encourage every 4-Her to do a presentation. To view the list of categories for presentations as well as more details visit the NC 4-H website. Learning to do presentations will help youth develop valuable life skills such as: expressing yourself clearly, learning how to gather information, organizing ideas, learning to speak in front of a group and developing a "I Can Do It" attitude. These are extremely important skills in todays world that are highly valued in our 4-H program.

We have all the resources to help you get started. Please call or email Nick or Dan at 828-456-3575 to get started on your presentation soon.
