This year’s West District 4-H officer team including Haywood County 4-H’er Abbegail King, have been working diligently to plan this year’s West District Appalachian Heritage Day.  4-H youth ages 5 to 12 years old will enjoy curriculum activities featuring Appalachian Heritage and Cherokee Culture, as well as enjoying 4-H friends, and fun!  Registration is $20 and includes lunch and event t-shirt.  To register for this event please contact the Extension Office at 828-456-3575.

STEAM 4-H Workshops

Fall STEAM 4-H Workshops
Magic of Electricity, Wednesday, November 13
NC Christmas Tree Industry, Wednesday, November 20
Youth ages five to 12 years old are invited to participate in two hands-on, interactive workshops to explore the Magic of Electricity.  4-H youth will complete curriculum activities from the Magic of Electricity 4-H curriculum and explore basic electrical concepts.  On Wednesday, November 20, 4-H youth will learn about the North Carolina Christmas Tree Industry; which is second in the nation!  Youth will learn about the growing requirements of Christmas trees, species grown in North Carolina, advantages of real Christmas trees and have the opportunity to make a Christmas tree ornament.  STEAM workshops will be held at the Waynesville Library after school from 3:30 to 5pm.  To register youth for Fall STEAM workshop please contact the Extension Center at 828-456-3575.

Panacea Coffeehouse in Frog Level
The 4-H Teen Leadership Council is open to teens, ages 12 to 18 years old.  The Teen Leadership Council members participate in a variety of leadership training opportunities throughout the year.  One of the local leadership programs is the Readers Are Leaders book reviews in which members teen council members read books dealing with different aspects of leadership development.  The next book in the leadership series is GRIT: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth.  This book expands upon the idea that the secret to outstanding achievement is not talent, but a special blend of passion and persistence Angela calls “grit.” GRIT expounds on principles like how lifelong interest is triggered, how grit can be learned, and the hard thing rule.  The next review series for GRIT will be held at the Panacea Coffeehouse in Frog Level on Monday, November 4 and Monday November 25 from 3:30pm to 5pm.  4-H youth participants are encouraged to bring money if they would like to purchase a drink during our meeting.  The address for Panacea Coffeehouse Café is 66 Commerce Street in Waynesville.

District Activity Day

Saturday, June 23 in Madison County from 10am to 2pm

Those 4-Her’s advancing from the county level presentation and public speaking contest are able to compete on the district level at District Activity Day.  Both silver and gold winners in each category and age division can compete at the state level in Raleigh, NC during State 4-H Congress.  State winners in sponsored categories receive cash awards.   In specific categories, the state-winning seniors may go on to compete at the national level.  Participants are chosen from each age division and category at county competition, May 22 at County Activity Night.

4-H County Activity Night at Extension Center

County level presentations and entertains are open to youth ages 5 to 19 years old.  The annual Spring Activity Night is our county competition night featuring the local entertains and county level presentations competition.  An afternoon of fun and competition for Haywood County 4-H, the Activity Night will be May 22 starting at 3pm in the auditorium of the Haywood Community College High Tech Center .  Each presenter will be given the presentation line-up in advance to schedule their time during the county level competition.  Please call the Extension Office at 828-456-3575 to schedule an appointment for judging by Friday, May 11.   Light refreshments will be provided for participants and guests.

4-H Application Resume Interview Essay (AIRE) Competition

Due: Friday, April 27 at Extension Office

Haywood County 4-Hers ages 13-18 are invited to participate in the Application, Resume, Interview and Essay (ARIE) workshop.  AIRE is a 4-step process by which youth are chosen to attend National events such as National Congress, National Conference, and International Leadership Conference.  As part of the application, 4-Hers need to capture records of their 4-H accomplishments and projects in a resume.  If you would like help with your application please call the Extension Office at 456-3575 to schedule a time to meet.

Monday, April 2 How to Create Your First Resume and Interview Basics Workshop

Youth participants, ages 12+, will learn about resumes: types of resumes, styles, design, and receive a draft to create their own resume.  Youth will receive a resume format to begin to fashion their own resume.  Youth will need to type and print a copy of their resume draft to bring to the second session. 

Monday, April 9 Working Session on Your First Resume

How would you like to take your resume draft and get help from human resource professionals.  This youth adult partnership will allow 4-H’ers to get help and advise on their resume in terms of grammar, style, and content. 

Monday, April 23 County Level Mock Interview

This is your opportunity to learn about interviews hands-on.  Experience is one of the best teachers.  Youth will receive tips to help their prepare for their interview during the first session on Monday, April 2.  County human resource professionals will serve as interview panelists to give youth feedback to improve for their next resume for the future; which could be for their first job, State 4-H ARIE competition, or college scholarship.

Haywood County residents active in 4-H; pursuing an undergraduate degree or technical training beyond high school; must maintain a 2.5 GPA in major. West District Teen Retreat

Location: Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain

Cost: $85 due with registration, deadline on Thursday, March 1

Youth ages 13 and older

Haywood County 4-Her’s ages 13 as of January 1 are invited to attend the West District Teen Retreat.  4-Hers will meet other county delegates from across the district, earn 4-H  Ambassador credits, take part in district officer elections, and participate in fun and informative workshops.  The cost of attending Teen Retreat is $85 and registration is due by Thursday, March 2.  Please call the Extension Center at 456-3575 to register or for more information.  4-Hers will need to bring a notepad, warm clothes for outdoor activities, and toiletries. 

West District 4-H Volunteer Leaders Spring Training

Cost: Early Bird $10, after deadline $15

Mark your calendars for the West District 4-H Volunteer Leaders Spring Training, Saturday, March 17, from 10 am to 2 pm.  West District volunteers can come and learn more about 4-H presentations, project records, electric program, ARIE, container gardens, hosting a chopped competition, and much more.  Registration fee includes materials and lunch.  The address for the Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center is 455 Research Drive, Mills River, NC 28759.

Teen Council Readers Are Leaders

The 4-H Teen Leadership Council is open to teens, ages 12 to 18 years old.  The Teen Leadership Council members participate in a variety of leadership training opportunities throughout the year.  One of the local leadership programs is the Readers Are Leaders, a leadership book review program, in which members teen council members read books dealing with different areas of leadership development.  This review will cover Emotional Intelligence by Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves.  Emotional Intelligence 2.0 delivers a step-by-step program for increasing your EQ via four, core EQ skills that enable you to achieve your fullest potential:
1) Self-Awareness
2) Self-Management
3) Social Awareness
4) Relationship Management  The upcoming book review will be held at the Canton Library afterschool on Monday,February 26 from 3:30pm to 5pm.  

4-H Educational Field Trip— Lost Sea Caverns

4-H’ers ages 5 to 18 are invited to participate in this fun day learning about regional caverns primitive life utilizing the caverns, cave formations, and natural wonders created inside a mountain.  $20 fee covers entrance into caverns.  4-H participants will need to pack a bag lunch and water bottle.

Youth will get to explore WNC Nature Center, Pisgah Wildlife Center and tour DuPont Waterfalls.  The WNC Nature Center features many local animal species including: river otters, black bear, red and gray wolves and cougars.  The Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education offers unique indoor and outdoor exhibits on North Carolina’s wildlife and mountain habits. Along the Parkway, Brevard features beautiful waterfalls like Looking Glass Falls and Sliding Rock.  $10 fee covers entrance into WNC Nature Center.  4-H participants will need to pack a bag lunch, water bottle, and sunscreen.  

District Activity Day

Good luck to our eleven county winners from the Haywood County 4-H Activity Night that will be advancing to the district level presentation and    entertains competition!  4-H’ers competing at DAD have researched and prepared a  5 to 10 minute presentation in a variety of categories including: Bugs and Bees, Environmental Science, Electricity, Livestock and Dairy Cattle.  This year District Activity Day will be held in Macon County at the Macon Middle School from 10am to 3pm.  Lunches will be provided by Haywood County 4-H through lunch vouchers given to families upon arrival and will be offered on site at the school cafeteria.   First and second place winners from DAD will be invited to advance to the state-level competition held during State 4-H Congress.

4-H Aerospace STEM Workshops

Waynesville Library Youth Department

Youth ages 5 to 9 are invited to take part in this Science Technology             Engineering and Math (STEM) workshop series featuring Aerospace.  The Aerospace curriculum was developed by the Iowa State University Cooperative Extension 4-H.  In this series, youth participants will complete hands-on activities and learn about concepts of science, engineering, and technology.  The workshop is a partnership between Haywood County 4-H and Waynesville Youth Library services and will be held at the Waynesville Library Youth Department on Tuesdays: June 13, 20, and 27 at 10:30am until 11:30am.    

4-H Farm to Fork Day Camp

Youth ages 5 to 13

During the 2015 Farm to Fork Day Camp, 4-Hers 5 to 13 year olds are invited to come experience a glimpse of Cherokee heritage here in the Appalachian mountains.  4-H’ers will visit local farms to learn about farming local foods and agricultural enterprises.  The camp is sponsored by generous support from Haywood County Farm Bureau.  The cost is $35 per youth participant; which includes materials, lunches, snacks, and a camper t-shirt.  Please call the Extension Center to register at 456-3575.
