4-H Farm to Fork Day Camp

During the 2015 Farm to Fork Day Camp, 4-Hers 5 to 13 year olds are invited to come experience a glimpse of Cherokee heritage here in the Appalachian mountains.  4-H’ers will visit local farms to learn about farming local foods and agricultural enterprises.  The camp is sponsored by generous support from Haywood County Farm Bureau.  The cost is $35 per youth participant; which includes materials, lunches, snacks, and a camper t-shirt.  Please call the Extension Center to register at 456-3575.

Dr. Seuss Cherokee Day


Thursday, July 14
Free and Registration Required in advance
4-H’ers will get to watch a Dr. Seuss’s classic film “Horton Hears a Who” in theaters’ at the Cherokee Phoenix Theater.  Then we will have lunch and fun activities at the Cherokee Island.  4-H’ers will have story time to hear several other Dr. Seuss stories and a chance to write their own children’s book.  4-H’ers will need to pack their own lunch and swim clothes if they wish to play in the creek.  Youth participants are encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, picnic bag lunch, water clothes and beach towel.  Please call 828-456-3575 to sign up in advance or for more information. 

Pink Beds and Cradle of Forestry Educational Field Trip



Tuesday, July 12 8am to 5pm 
Pick-up and Drop-off at Extension Center
Haywood 4-H’ers are welcome to come to the Cradle of Forestry right in our back yard.  Youth participants will get to explore the first forestry school in America established by the Biltmore Estate, get a glimpse of life in the 1900s, and visit the Forestry Discovery Center.  After touring the Cradle of Forestry we will have a picnic at Pink Beds and go on a short hike.  4-H’ers will need to bring a refillable water bottle, bag lunch, walking shoes, and sunscreen.  The event is free.  4-H’ers need to call and register in advance and be ready to leave by 8:30am.  Please call the Extension Center at 456-3575 to sign up in advance. 

Extension 4-H Canned Food Drive



Now through March 11
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NCA&T) is celebrating being 125 years old this year.  NCA&T School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences is asking 4-H’ers to donate canned goods and other non-perishable food items by March 11 to be part of a statewide Cooperative Extension campaign that feeds the hungry and celebrates small farmers.  Please bring items to the Haywood County Cooperative Extension Center.  Everything collected will help feed local food-insecure residents of Haywood County. 

Livestock Club 2016 Kick-Off

The 4-H Livestock Club is inviting interested 4-H’ers to come and join the club.  4-Her's in the Livestock Club learn how to calculate an animals' overall rate of gain for market purposes, and they even learn how to present themselves in front of a judge. Livestock Judging, Skill-a-thon, and Quiz Bowl Contests are events that offer youth the opportunity to showcase their skills and knowledge of the livestock industry; as well as developing public speaking skills.  The club also teaches 4-Hers to train and show their own livestock and the club has been active in Haywood County for over 20 years.  For more information please contact the Haywood Extension Center at 456-3575.

Teen Council Readers Are Leaders



Monday, February 29, March 14, and April 4 from 3:30 to 5pm
Panacea Coffee House in Frog Level
The 4-H Teen Leadership Council is open to teens, ages 12 to 18 years old.  The Teen Leadership Council members participate in a variety of leadership training opportunities throughout the year.  One of the local leadership programs is the Readers Are Leaders book reviews in which members teen council members read books dealing with different areas of leadership development.  This review will be for Thanks for the Feedback: The Science and Art of Receiving Feedback Wee by Douglas Stone and Sheila Heen.  The book discussions will be held at Panacea Coffeehouse CafĂ© & Roastery in Frog Level of Waynesville afterschool on Mondays from 3:30pm to 5pm.  Coffee will be provided for youth council members to enjoy during the book review.  For more information please contact the Extension Center at 456-3575.
