Gem Mining at Mason Mountain Mine in Macon County

Thursday June 20 starting at 10am
Cost: $6.00 per person for 2 buckets of dirt.
Tartan Museum charges $1.00 for ages 6-12 and $2 for adults
Open to all 4-H families – Transportation is on your own
Location: Downtown Franklin for museums and
Hwy 28 for Mason Mountain Mine
You may strike it rich gem mining!  While in Macon County, you will also want to visit the Historical Museum, the Gem and Mineral Museum, Ruby City Gem Shop and Scottish Tartan Museum all in downtown Franklin.  Take a walk along the Greenway and enjoy your picnic at one of the shelters or at the picnic tables between the Historical and Gem Museums.  What to Bring: Bring picnic lunch and water, sun screen, hat and bug repellent.  Call the Extension Center at 456-3575 to register by June 7th.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Day at Cataloochee


Tuesday, June 11 from 10am to 4pm
(please note if rainy weather event will be canceled)
Open to all 4-H families
Grab your passport, not the one to leave the county, but your National Park Passport and go with Haywood County Extension 4-H to Cataloochee! 
4-Hers are encouraged to bring their cameras and take photos to enter into their county’s fair this fall.  4-Hers will view wildlife including deer, elk, and turkey; as well as homes and barn structures from the time period.  4-Hers will walk trails, eat watermelon, and pitch horseshoes or corn hole, play in the creek and enjoy a beautiful day as Appalachian kids would have over 100 years ago. 
Participants need to bring pack lunch, towel, swim clothes, sunscreen, water shoes, camera, snacks, and refillable water bottle.  Teen youth council members will also work on two spots for the environmental video.  This event is free.  Please call the Extension Center at 456-3575 to sign-up.

Basic Self Defense Class


Monday and Wednesdays, June 10 & 12 and June 17 & 19
Extension Center from 10am to 11:30am
No Cost - participants need to bring a water bottle and snacks to share
Instructor Marshall Hell, from MedWest Fitness Center will lead this four-session self defense class.  The class is designed to help youth participants
defend themselves in an attack situation.  4-Hers will learn methods and
maneuvers to escape.  As a youth council project the class is offered free of charge to 4-Hers.  However, 4-Hers need to bring snacks to share and a
