County Deadline: Friday, January 11
Project records highlight what a 4-Her has learned and done in a specific project area for a period of 12 months.  The books are judged in age categories of: 9-10, 11-12, 13-15, and 16-18.  They need to be submitted to the Haywood County 4-H office December 15.  The top county winners in each of the curriculum areas are then submitted to Raleigh for the district competition. 

4-H Honor Club



4-H Honor Club
County Deadline: Monday, February 4
Only one half of one percent of 4-Hers are accepted into the North Carolina 4-H Honor Club.  The organization was organized in 1931 by Mr. L.R. Harrill as a way to develop a statewide 4-H service organization. Today, the NC 4-H Honor Club has almost 3000 members from across the state and nation.  Membership in the North Carolina 4-H Honor Club is bestowed upon those 4-H'ers who have exhibited outstanding 4-H citizenship and leadership throughout their 4-H career. An Honor Club member continues to provide leadership and service to the total 4-H program throughout life. You must have completed three or more years of 4-H club work and shall be at least 16 years of age and not more than 20 years of age on January 1 of the year of application. Applications are due January 13 to the State 4-H Office.

There are over 30 4-H college scholarships available for North Carolina 4-Hers. The fall semester is fast and furious for college freshmen as college and scholarships applications mount.  Go ahead and look through the NC 4-H scholarship guide to find which scholarships you are eligible for based upon your area of study and where you intend to study.  Scholarship applications are due January 11.

Christmas traditions vary across the world, but in every country one thing is the same: Christmas is a time to celebrate. While children in the states look forward to jolly Santa Claus leaving presents for them under a lighted tree, children around the world enjoy a very different vision of Christmas. This holiday season, 4-H will travel the world by throwing a bash that brings together Christmas traditions and festivities from around the globe.  We’ll have a fun time creating traditional crafts and playing games.  All 4-Hers are welcome to participate in this fun workshop learning about different cultures from 6 to 8:30pm on Friday December 7.  Please call the Extension Center at 456-3575 to sign-up.

Youth Council Summit


Deadline to Register: October 5
Leave: Saturday, October 27 8:30am at Extension Center
Return: Sunday, October 28 at 1:30 to Extension Center
Cost: $25 fee for attending and $10 for lunch
Youth Council Members are invited to attend the 4th Annual Youth Council Summit to convene all seven youth councils at Fontana Village Resort in Robbinsville, NC.  The theme is creating regional networks for the leaders of tomorrow.  The Center for Creative Leadership will run fun and interactive workshops on vision and leadership.  For our fun activity on Saturday night council members will listen to ghost stories at the historic Gunter Cabin, then go on a haunted trail and house, and return to a bon fire with smores.  Please call the Extension Center at 456-3575 to register by Friday, October 5.

Extension 4-H Etiquette Dinner



Great opportunity to learn about properly using table manners, navigating a formal place setting, going through a buffet properly, and using utensils correctly.  

 Scholarship interviewers and one day even your employer may want to see you in social situations to observe how you conduct yourself, particularly if the job you want requires a certain standard of conduct with clients and superiors. Your familiarity and comfort with proper etiquette could open many opportunities! 

The Etiquette Dinner will be held at the Lambuth Inn at Lake Junaluska on Monday, September 24 at 6pm.  The cost is $20 and 4-Hers will need to dress business casual.  Please call the Extension Center at 456-3575 to sign-up by Friday, September 21.

WLOS John Lee stopped by the Extension Center to join 4Her’s as they learned about how plants grow.  Youth created Soil-Sams, similar to Chia-Pets, to learn about the process to reinforce a enriching hands-on learning experience.  

Farm Bureau sponsored the 4H Farm to Fork Annual Agricultural Day Camp for Haywood Count youth. Camp this year focused on Appalachian heritage farming and crafts.  To see what 4Hers learned see the link below:


Haywood County Fair

Youth and adults are invited to enter their artwork, photography, sewing, vegetables, canned or baked items, etc.  Entries will be accepted 10am until 6pm on Tuesday, August 21 to the fair grounds.  Adult and senior 4-H volunteers are needed on Tuesday, August 21 from 10-6pm to help with registration.  If you are available from 10-1pm, 1-3pm, or 3-6pm please call the Extension office at 456-3575 to sign up.

Farm to Fork Day Camp

Tuesday, July 31 through Thursday, August 2 from 9am to 4pm

Youth ages 6 to 12 are invited to participate in Haywood Extension 4-H Farm to Fork Day Camp, sponsored by Farm Bureau.  The theme for this year’s Farm to Fork Day Camp is “Heritage Farming in Appalachia.” The camp will be held July 31 to August 2 from 9am to 3pm at the Extension Center.            
 The mountains that we call home are rich in the farming heritage of our ancestors and modern day neighbors.  Day campers will complete hands-on activities to learn about their food and explore local farms in the area, including the historical farm on the Great Smoky Mountain Parkway in Cherokee.  Youth will experience activities involving making homemade ice cream, Appalachian storytelling, and traditional Appalachian crafts.
4-Hers 13 to 18 are invited to participate as youth leaders to gain leadership skills and lead activities during the camp. 
The cost for the Farm to Fork Day Camp is $35; which includes all materials and snacks.  4-Her’s will need to bring a bag lunch, water bottle, and sunscreen each day.  To register call the Extension Center at 456-3575. 

4-H Trip to Ripley's Aquarium


Tuesday, June 12 from 8am to 3pm
Cost $15 and register by June 8
4-Hers will go through a variety of exciting aquatic stations including: rainforest, ocean, coral, shark lagoon, seas gallery, stingray bay, touch-a-ray, penguin playhouse stations, and a Ripley’s classroom experience.  After our adventure packed tour, 4-Hers will have a picnic in Pigeon Forge.  4-Hers will need to bring a bag lunch and need to register and pay $20 ticket fee by Friday, June 8.  Call the Extension Center at 456-3575 or visit the Extension Center to register by Friday, June 8

Dance Showcase Thursday, July 26
Cost $10 per person for six weeks
Instructors Linda and Bill Marquis will teach ballroom basics for a six week course here at the Extension Center.  They love sharing ballroom dancing with other people, especially young people!  Open to ages 9 to 18, the class will meet from 11am to 12:30pm each week, except for July 5, and end on July 26 with a dance for youth to showcase what they have learned.  Call the Extension Center at 456-3575 or visit the Extension Center to register by Friday, June 1st.  Please try to sign up in couples.
